Book Buddies – Favourite Character Team-ups

Having a strong main character can make a so-so book good. Having a strong couple of book buddies can make a good book great. The trick is to find personalities that balance each other out.

This week’s Friday Favourites is Favourite Character Team-ups, or as I prefer to call them: Book Buddies! Friday Favourites is hosted by Something of the Book.

I’m going to give just a wee list of five team-ups that make for a fantastic read. Please let me know if you agree!

My list of book buddies:

Aziraphale and Crowley

Good Omens by Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett came out on Amazon Prime a few months ago. The Husbeast and I have been enjoying the book for well over a decade. They’re another great opposites attract partnership. I’ve always seen their relationship as two entities from opposing sides learning to watch each other’s backs to protect each other and the home they’ve shared for millennia.

Not to take the hearts out of anyone’s eyes, but I’m not an Aziraphale/Crowley shipper. I think that in this day and age we need more adequate representation of men just being friends. Good friends who take care of each other. I think, when it comes to gay representation, I’d rather writers and producers actually write good gay characters that don’t die at the drop of a hat.

Lt. Eve Dallas and Det. Delia Peabody

Eve Dallas is the main character of JD Robb’s In Death series. Delia Peabody is her partner in the workplace. They’re a wonderful example of opposites attracting. Eve is the hard-arsed, no-nonsense cop. Peabody knits and comes from a sprawling family of Free Agers. The verbal byplay is awesome.

Elinor and Marianne Dashwood

Regency-era sisters whose father passed away just before his daughters were settled with husbands. The book, Sense and Sensibility by Jane Austen, is about more than the pragmatic Elinor and her sentimental sister Marianne.

There is an overarching theme of how much a woman is worth. How much is her dowry? Does she have lands to pass to her husband? What status does she hold in her family, in her community, and in the country? In the end, the two sisters come to realize that they have something worth more than all these things: each other.

Gyre and Em

If you haven’t read The Luminous Dead by Caitlin Starling, you really should. Gyre is a caver looking to finish a job that will give her enough money to get off her rock of a planet. Em is her one and only 24/7 handler. They start their relationship with lies between them and have to learn to trust. At times the relationship reminds me of the GLaDOS and the player in Portal. Em is the voice in Gyre’s ear that urges her forward, tells her to stop, and at times, takes control.

Rincewind and TwoFlower

Okay. So this pairing is an odd one. They’re also the first protagonists we meet in Terry Pratchett’s Discworld series (The Colour of Magic and The Light Fantastic). Rincewind is a wizard who can’t wiz (Spells are living entities and they’re afraid of the one other spell he knows. They vamoose when they see him coming). TwoFlower is the Discworld’s first tourist. Together with TwoFlower’s luggage (seriously, a trunk with little feet), they have adventures.

Well…TwoFlower has adventures. Rincewind just runs away from a lot of things.
